Pressing a brightly coloured square and hearing a sound come back is one of the most satisfying cause-and-effect interactions a sensory environment can offer - and the TFH Interactive Musical Squares delivers it with eight individually lit colour switches, nine selectable sound modes, and enough physical flexibility to work on the floor or mounted to the wall. Available across North America from The Sensory Supply in three configurations, it is a multi-sensory activity panel that engages the auditory, visual, and motor systems simultaneously from a single touch.
The panel is 36" wide, 24" tall, and 6.6" deep - slim enough to sit flush against a wall or lay flat on the floor without creating a trip hazard. The floor pad (90 x 140 x 8cm, approximately 35" x 55") is a soft, padded surface that users can crawl onto, step across, or press with their hands. Children weighing 60 lbs and up can step directly on the colour squares to activate sounds, making it one of the few sensory music tools that engages the whole body - not just the hands.
Choosing Your Configuration
Three variants are available. The w/ Floor Pad (9MSQR, $3,795 CAD) includes the Musical Squares panel and the soft floor pad - users interact with both the vertical panel at reach height and the horizontal floor pad beneath them. The w/ Wall Pad (9MSQRW, $3,795 CAD) includes the panel and a wall-mounted soft pad, suited to settings where floor space is limited or a standing reach-and-press interaction is preferred. The Floor Pad Only (9MSQRM, $1,747 CAD) provides the padded floor pad without the panel, for settings that already have a Musical Squares panel or want to add floor-level interaction to an existing installation.
Key Features of the TFH Interactive Musical Squares
- 8 Colour Switches, 8 Different Colours - Each of the eight squares is a distinct, bright colour that lights up independently on activation, delivering simultaneous visual and auditory feedback with every touch and creating a clear, joyful cause-and-effect response
- 9 Sound Modes - Everyday Noises, Sci-Fi, Human Noises, Transportation, Bells, Percussion, Babies, Farm Animals, and Simon Says; each mode transforms the squares into a completely different sound environment, extending the play and therapy value of a single piece of equipment across dozens of session types
- Simon Says Mode for Social & Cognitive Games - The Simon Says mode introduces a structured sequence game within the panel itself, supporting attention, memory, sequencing, and social participation without any additional equipment
- Touch-Activated, Movement-Sensitive Design - A single touch activates sound and light; no pressure threshold makes it accessible for users with limited hand strength, and the floor pad is weight-activated for full gross motor use
- Slimline Panel, 36" W x 24" H x 6.6" Deep - The slim profile suits both wall-mounted and floor-flat installation; the panel takes up minimal wall real estate in a sensory room or classroom while remaining clearly visible from across the space
- Soft Padded Floor Pad (90 x 140 x 8cm) - The padded floor surface is safe for crawling, stepping, and pressing; users weighing 60 lbs and up can step directly on the colour squares for full-body gross motor activation
- Clear, High-Quality Audio - The sound output is described as fabulous in quality and clear throughout the room; the audio is not tinny or toy-like - it is designed for sensory room use where sound quality matters for auditory processing
- Standard Wall Outlet Power - Mains powered via standard wall outlet; no batteries required and no recharging cycles to manage, making it suitable for continuous daily use in institutional settings
The Nine Sound Modes in Detail
The sound mode range covers the full spectrum from structured therapeutic use to open exploratory play. Everyday Noises and Human Noises support auditory recognition and environmental sound processing. Sci-Fi and Babies offer novel, attention-capturing sounds that work well for alerting or engaging reluctant users. Transportation and Farm Animals connect to curriculum themes and vocabulary development. Bells and Percussion provide musical tonal input for auditory discrimination and rhythm work. Simon Says introduces the only mode with a structured sequence component, making it particularly useful for memory, attention, and turn-taking goals in a group session.
Skills Developed Through Use
- Gross Motor Planning & Coordination - Stepping across, crawling onto, and reaching to press the colour squares requires the body to plan and execute deliberate, coordinated movement sequences, building gross motor planning skills through purposeful physical engagement
- Cause & Effect Understanding - Each touch produces an immediate, consistent, and satisfying sound and light response, building the understanding that actions produce predictable outcomes - a foundational cognitive and communication skill
- Auditory Processing & Sound Discrimination - Across nine sound modes, users hear a wide range of sound types and must attend to them, identify them, and respond to them, supporting auditory processing and discrimination development
- Colour Recognition & Visual Attention - Eight distinct, brightly lit colour squares reinforce colour naming, colour matching, and sustained visual attention through the natural motivation of sound feedback
- Memory & Sequencing - The Simon Says mode specifically trains short-term memory and sequential action planning as users watch and repeat colour sequences of increasing length
- Social Participation & Turn-Taking - The Simon Says mode and any group-use configuration of the panel support waiting, observing, and taking turns within a motivating shared activity
