The TFH Sound Responsive Ladder Light Panel makes volume visible. Each of its 15 brightly coloured rungs illuminates in ascending order as sound gets louder - a quiet whisper lights the first two or three rungs, a normal speaking voice fills the middle, and a loud shout or projected breath lights the panel from base to top. The ascending visual display gives the user real-time biofeedback on their own volume and breath output, which is why this panel has become a clinical staple for speech-language pathologists and occupational therapists working on vocalization and breath control goals across North America. With 7 activity modes, adjustable sensitivity, and both built-in and external microphone options, it is a versatile speech and sensory therapy tool suited to a wide range of users and session types.
The panel is 42" tall, 15" wide, and 8" deep. It mounts vertically to a wall using the included brass clips - wall hardware is not included separately. It can also be used free-standing. The built-in microphone picks up sound from anywhere in the room; for users with a quieter voice or those working at low volume, an external microphone can be plugged in to bring the detection source closer to the user's mouth, making the panel accessible for users whose voice output is soft.
TFH Ladder Light Masks (SKU 9NLLM) are available separately to add visual variety to sessions - the masks change the appearance of the rungs and introduce different session contexts without requiring an additional panel.
Key Features of the TFH Sound Responsive Ladder Light Panel
- 15 Colour-Coded Rungs in Ascending Order - 15 individually illuminated rungs light up from the base upward as sound volume increases, creating a direct, real-time visual display of the user's voice output that is immediately readable from across a therapy room
- 7 Activity Modes - Seven different operational modes give the facilitator the ability to change the session context without changing equipment, extending the therapeutic value of a single panel across a broad range of activities and session goals
- Adjustable Sensitivity Control - The sensitivity of the built-in microphone is fully adjustable, allowing the panel to be calibrated for quiet individual sessions or for group settings with ambient background noise
- Built-In and External Microphone Options - The panel includes a built-in microphone for standard room use; an external microphone can be plugged in for users with quieter voices, bringing the sound detection source directly to the user's mouth for more responsive and accessible biofeedback
- Vertical Wall-Mount Installation - Brass mounting clips are included; the panel mounts vertically to the wall; wall mounting hardware is not included; alternatively it can be used free-standing without any installation
- LED Lighting Throughout - Updated LED technology provides brighter, more intriguing illumination than previous versions, making the rung display more vivid and visually engaging in therapy rooms and sensory spaces
- Made in England - Manufactured to TFH's therapeutic equipment standards; compatible with TFH Ladder Light Masks (9NLLM, sold separately) for additional session variety
- Mains Powered - Connects to a standard wall outlet; no batteries required
The Clinical Case - Visual Biofeedback for Speech & Communication Goals
The ascending column design is what sets this panel apart from other sound-responsive sensory tools. Most sound-responsive panels - including the Infinity Tunnel and the Sound to Light Panel - react to sound with colour changes or pattern shifts that are visually interesting but do not give a precise, readable measure of volume level. The Ladder Light Panel does. The rungs represent a measurable scale: the user and the therapist can both see exactly how many rungs are lit and work toward a specific target number.
This makes it genuinely useful for volume regulation goals. A therapist can set a target - "keep the lights below rung eight" for volume control work, or "hold the lights above rung ten" for projection and breath support work. The panel turns abstract vocal goals into a concrete visual target that the user can self-monitor in real time. For users building intentional communication skills, the ability to see their own voice output as a rising column of light creates a motivating and self-regulating feedback loop that verbal encouragement alone cannot replicate.
Skills Developed Through Use
- Breath Control & Volume Regulation - Controlling how many rungs light up by adjusting breath force and voice volume develops precise breath control and regulated volume, the foundational physical skills for clear, consistent speech production
- Vocalization & Voice Projection - Sustaining sound to keep the ladder lit, or projecting to reach higher rungs, motivates purposeful vocalization and builds voice projection strength and endurance
- Cause & Effect Understanding - The direct, real-time relationship between sound output and rung illumination builds a clear understanding that actions produce measurable, predictable outcomes
- Sustained Attention & Goal-Directed Behaviour - Working toward a target rung number requires sustained attention and deliberate self-monitoring, developing the attentional control and goal-directed behaviour that support learning across all contexts
- Social Participation & Turn-Taking - In group sessions, taking turns to light the panel and comparing rung counts creates a structured, motivating shared activity that supports social participation and communication turn-taking
