Draw Your Melodies, Learn Musical Structure & Rhythm - Handcrafted Programmable Music Box, Made in Quebec.

Description

The Ara by Ara Musique is a programmable cylinder music box that lets children compose and play their own music by drawing on the cylinder surface, available now across North America at The Sensory Supply. Designed for children from kindergarten to grade 6, it is the only instrument that makes the physical act of writing become the act of composing - no apps, no screens, no prior musical knowledge required. Just a child, a cylinder, a crank, and their own drawn melody.

The Ara brings together music education, hands-on sensory play, and creative expression in a single, elegant, crank-operated tool. Turn the crank forward or backward - the cylinder spins and the melody plays. Draw more, hear more. Erase and redraw to compose something entirely different.

The four coloured lines - red, blue, yellow, and green - divide the cylinder into four musical measures. Children who are just starting to explore music can fill a single measure with a drawn melody. Older children can work across all four, developing their understanding of musical structure, phrasing, and composition.

Key Features of the Ara Musique - The Ara

  • Programmable by Drawing on the Cylinder Surface - Children compose music by drawing directly on the cylinder surface - each drawn mark corresponds to a note that plays when the crank is turned, making the physical act of drawing inseparable from the act of composing; no musical notation knowledge is required to begin
  • Four Colour-Coded Musical Measures - Four vibrant lines (red, blue, yellow, and green) divide the cylinder into four distinct musical measures, giving children a visible structure for understanding phrase length, repetition, and musical form
  • Visual Rhythm Cues - Beats and Counterbeats Marked - Visual cues on the left side of the cylinder mark beats (1, 2, 3, 4) and counterbeats (dots), teaching children about timing, musical flow, on-beat and off-beat placement as they draw their compositions
  • Diatonic C Major Scale from G3 to D5 - A rainbow of colours on the handle shows the notes of the C major diatonic scale from G3 to D5, allowing children to understand and navigate a full musical scale while they compose
  • Bi-Directional Crank - Plays in Either Direction - Turning the crank in either direction spins the cylinder and plays the melody, allowing children to hear their composition forward and backward - a playful way to explore how music changes direction
  • Accessible from Kindergarten through Grade 6 - The Ara is deliberately designed to grow with the child: younger children compose simple melodies by drawing freely, while older children engage with more sophisticated compositional structures using all four measures and the full scale range
  • No Screens, No Apps - All interaction is physical - drawing, cranking, erasing, and redrawing; the Ara keeps composition tactile and hands-on in an environment where children spend increasing time on digital devices

Skills & Development Supported by The Ara

  • Musical Literacy & Auditory Processing - Experiencing beat, counterbeat, scale, and musical phrase through physical drawing and listening develops foundational musical literacy and auditory processing in a context that is self-directed and intrinsically motivating
  • Fine Motor Skills - Drawing precise marks on the cylinder surface and turning the crank develop the hand control, coordination, and precision that underpin writing, drawing, and daily fine motor tasks
  • Cognitive Development & Executive Function - Planning a melody, placing notes in deliberate positions, revising and rehearing, and managing the four-measure compositional structure develops working memory, planning, attention, and flexible thinking
  • Creative Thinking & Self-Expression - The immediate, physical connection between drawing and music-making supports creative risk-taking, iterative experimentation, and the development of a personal artistic voice
  • Proprioceptive Input & Motor Regulation - The repetitive, controlled crank motion provides calming proprioceptive input that many children find regulating; the rhythmic turn-and-listen cycle supports motor planning and sensory self-regulation
  • Language & Communication - Describing, sharing, and explaining a composed melody - "I made this part fast," "I put notes here because..." - develops musical vocabulary, expressive language, and the ability to talk about creative choices
